Every era of the web mistakes its conventions for neutrality.
Early blue links now look austere. Late-1990s portals look noisy. Flash sites look theatrical. Today’s immaculate product grids may eventually look just as specific—and just as dated.
That is not a failure. A website is made from the tools, bandwidth, business models, and cultural moods of its moment. Style is the visible residue of those conditions.

The web as a document
The first sites inherited the logic of research papers: headings, lists, blue links, and very little visual authorship. The radical part was not how a page looked, but that one document could lead to another.

The web discovers decoration
Background images, visitor counters, animated GIFs, frames, tiled textures, and browser-specific badges made pages feel handmade. Limitations were visible, and personality often came from working around them.
Flash let designers choreograph sound, motion, typography, and transitions as one continuous experience. At the same time, CSS began separating content from presentation and made more flexible visual systems possible.
Smartphones changed the unit of design from a fixed canvas to a fluid system. Grids, web fonts, flat UI, generous white space, and familiar product patterns became the new signals of competence.
Design systems and component libraries made interfaces faster to build and easier to use. They also produced a recognizable template: hero, gradient, cards, social proof, call to action. Usability rose while surprise often fell.
Expressive sites borrow from games, operating systems, fan archives, magazines, and old personal pages. The strongest examples do not add nostalgia as a skin; they use interaction and art direction to make a brand feel inhabitable.
KiiiKiii’s official website is an interactive extension of the five-member K-pop group’s album universe. Its current visual language is built around their 2026 EP Delulu Pack, including “Delulu” and “404 (New Era).”
It behaves less like an artist homepage and more like a strange computer found in a teenager’s bedroom: overlapping windows, fragments, a digital zine, member-specific spaces, image-making, and webcam energy.
