Le Tre Meraviglie / Intergenerational social design / 2021

Technology was the barrier. So the over-60s became the designers.

During the pandemic, I helped a Trentino team co-design with 25 people over 60, taught interaction design and led the project website.

Le Tre Meraviglie homepage design with the project mark and the line “Creiamo insieme la comunità dei nonni super tecnologici”.

A scent-based therapy game, a Trentino board game, and an online platform.

over-60 consultants

25

Participants over 60 were briefed as consultants, not enrolled as students.

public presentation

1 Oct 2021

The work was shown to the community on the International Day of Older Persons.

Two Trentino institutes—one for design, one for IT—ran their internships inside the project.

The social problem

Older people wrote the brief.

Workshops and video calls turned participants' memories, everyday problems and ideas into three product briefs.

How a Meraviglia was made

Listen. Prototype. Show.

  1. 01Workshops

    Collect stories and problems.

  2. 02Design briefs

    Students develop three responses.

  3. 03Feedback

    Participants review the prototypes.

Teaching

Teach the methods.

The students learned basic interaction design and design thinking.

Research

Start from personal stories.

Memories and daily routines supplied the briefs.

The third Meraviglia

Build a place for the project.

I led the site from sitemap to presented interface.

Interface

Make the content approachable.

Readable type and simple page structure supported less experienced visitors.

After the presentation

Presented in October 2021.

  • A site structure the association can update without redesigning it
  • Methodology published as downloadable material instead of staying internal
  • Over-60 consultants named and contactable, including for schools

HAAM’s role

Hosted the design team; led the website.

HAAM hosted the design placement and led the site. Project: Tremembè and partners; art coordination: Cindy Baptista; project coordination: Michela Boldrer. Funded by Italy's Ministry of Labour and Trento Province.

Next case study

A theatre site rebuilt around the moment somebody needs a ticket.
