TEDxSãoTomé / Public culture / São Tomé and Príncipe

A public stage for ideas from a country the world rarely sees.

TEDxSãoTomé began as a visibility mission: make local expertise visible, welcome exchange from beyond the islands, and create a digital place where the event could feel both ceremonial and immediately understandable.

The premise

The website was part invitation, part programme, and part proof that the stage existed.

São Tomé and Príncipe is geographically small and still unfamiliar to many people outside the region. TEDxSãoTomé created a reason for local specialists, artists, entrepreneurs, and public voices to be seen together rather than as isolated stories.

The digital experience had to serve the people in the room while also making the event legible to international visitors, future partners, and anyone who encountered a speaker or idea after the event had ended.

The interaction model

Meaning first. People next. Logistics when needed.

  1. 01Why this gathering matters

The theme and purpose create an emotional reason to keep reading.

  2. 02Who will be on the stage

Speakers and performers turn an abstract conference into human stories.

  3. 03How to take part

Programme, date, venue, and partner information support the final decision.

01

Invitation

Make the event feel important without making it difficult to understand.

TEDxSãoTomé needed ceremony, energy, and a sense of occasion. The interface still had to answer practical questions immediately: what is happening, who is speaking, where is it, and when should people arrive?

  • A strong event theme created the emotional entry point
  • Speakers and performances made the programme tangible
  • Date, venue, and schedule remained easy to verify
02

People

Put São Toméan voices before the event machinery.

The website was not only selling a ticket or publishing a timetable. It was presenting people, knowledge, and experiences from a country that is often absent from global cultural and technology narratives.

  • Speaker stories became the bridge between local knowledge and global curiosity
  • The programme mixed talks, performances, and conversation
  • Partner visibility supported the event without taking over the main journey
03

Campaign reality

Design for short deadlines, changing details, and mobile attention.

Event websites live under pressure. Speaker details change, sponsor requirements arrive late, and most campaign traffic comes through social links on phones. The page used modular sections so the team could keep information current without rebuilding the whole experience.

  • Reusable speaker, programme, and partner blocks
  • A lightweight one-page structure for campaign traffic
  • Clear visual hierarchy for bright-light, mobile viewing

What remains

An event page eventually becomes an archive.

The live site now preserves the 2018 Re|Evolution edition. Its next useful evolution would be to state that archival role clearly and lead visitors toward the talks, speakers, and ideas that can continue travelling after the event.

Next product decision

Move from attendance to afterlife.

Organise talks, speaker outcomes, thematic collections, and educational reuse so the value of the event continues beyond one date.
