01
Spend attention on decisions
Identify the moments where a person must understand, choose, notice risk, or form trust. Give those moments the strongest hierarchy and the least competition.
Important decisions become easier to see and defend.
DATA-DRIVEN interaction DESIGN / Summer Season ’26
10 / Attention
Digital production is becoming abundant. Human attention is not. HAAM helps products decide what deserves to be noticed, what can wait, and what should disappear entirely.
HAAM skills
The constraint changed
Screens, features, messages, and content are becoming cheaper to generate. The scarce part is the person on the other side: their time, working memory, patience, and willingness to switch context. Product design now has to manage abundance without turning the interface into a fight for notice.
Design the allocation
A useful product does not maximize engagement everywhere. It creates a clear hierarchy, protects judgment, and removes demands that the system can handle itself.

02
Sequence information, use progressive disclosure, strengthen defaults, and remove decorative urgency so the interface asks for one kind of thinking at a time.
Less cognitive switching and fewer avoidable mistakes.
03
Automate repetitive checks, quiet non-urgent notifications, preserve progress, and make recovery obvious. A product should return more attention than it consumes.
A calmer relationship between the product and the person using it.
An attention budget
Treat attention like a finite operating budget. Before adding a banner, badge, animation, alert, step, or choice, decide what it is allowed to interrupt and why it deserves the cost.
What you leave with
Clarity is not the opposite of growth. Products earn repeat use when people can reach value without being manipulated, interrupted, or forced to re-understand the interface every time.
Useful from day one
Protect the scarce part
Bring the noisy flow, crowded interface, notification system, or website that keeps asking for more than the user has available.
