Cindy Baptista / Visual art and expressive education / 2013

Let the paintings arrive before the résumé.

Cindy Baptista’s practice moves between painting, graphic design, and expressive education across Cape Verde, Portugal, and Italy. I shaped the portfolio so a visitor meets the colour and atmosphere first, then can understand the work, its context, and the person behind it without turning the artist into a list of credentials.

Cindy Baptista's Nymph of the Drops, a 2015 watercolour and pastel painting.

2018

Cindy exhibited in a participatory project about diversity at Bergamo’s African Museum.

Medium, dimensions, and year stay attached to each work instead of disappearing behind mood.

The portfolio problem

An artist can be coherent without becoming one-dimensional.

Cindy’s work does not sit inside one neat professional label. She is a visual artist, a trained graphic and multimedia designer, and an expressive educator whose projects have involved children, young people, and adults in different cultural contexts. A conventional portfolio could easily split those parts apart or bury the art beneath biography.

The website needed a quieter hierarchy. Paintings should create the first encounter. Essential facts should remain available. Education, exhibitions, and community work should add depth when the visitor is ready for it. The goal was not to explain everything at once, but to make the whole practice feel connected.

The viewing journey

Enter through colour. Stay for the work. Leave knowing the artist.

  1. 01Meet the visual language

Large artwork and a restrained interface let atmosphere, figures, animals, and dreamlike forms establish identity before explanatory copy begins.

  2. 02Read the work as an object

Titles, dates, dimensions, and materials give each painting a stable record that curators, collaborators, and collectors can use.

  3. 03Understand the wider practice

Exhibitions, expressive education, and contact information reveal the social and professional context around the images.

Artist first

Keep the interface from competing with the paintings.

The portfolio did not need a loud visual identity layered on top of Cindy’s own. I used clear spacing, direct navigation, and generous image treatment so the site behaves more like a room for the work than a separate design performance.

  • Artwork carries the strongest visual weight
  • Navigation stays short and memorable
  • The surrounding interface gives colour room to breathe

Artwork records

Poetry still needs dimensions, dates, and materials.

A painting can be emotionally open while its documentation remains exact. Works such as Smell of the Sea and Nymph of the Drops keep their year, scale, and media visible, helping the portfolio function as both an encounter and a practical reference.

  • Every work retains a clear title and date
  • Dimensions make physical scale understandable online
  • Materials such as watercolour, pastel, and Posca remain searchable evidence

Context

Show that the work belongs to lived communities, not only galleries.

Cindy’s participation in Oltre il Muro connected art with dialogue about diversity through performance, plastic arts, food, activities, and debate. The portfolio needed space for that context because it changes how the paintings and the artist’s educational practice are understood.

  • Exhibitions sit beside individual works instead of in a detached résumé
  • Social and educational practice adds meaning without overpowering the art
  • Cross-cultural experience becomes part of the story rather than a decorative label

Professional path

Make interest easy to turn into a conversation.

A portfolio has a practical job after attention is earned. Curators, schools, cultural organisations, and collaborators need a direct way to understand fit and make contact. I kept that path visible without turning the site into a sales funnel that would feel wrong for the work.

  • Contact remains part of the primary navigation
  • The work provides evidence before any request to engage
  • Different professional audiences can reach the same clear next step

The digital archive

A portfolio should remember more than the algorithm does.

Social platforms can circulate a painting quickly, but they flatten chronology, crop images, separate captions from context, and make older work difficult to find. The owned site gives Cindy a small archive where each work keeps its name, material, scale, and place in the larger practice.

That archive does not need to become heavy. A simple content structure makes it possible to add a painting or exhibition without redesigning the whole site, while stable URLs allow individual works to be shared directly.

  • A durable record for individual works and exhibitions
  • Direct links that preserve context outside social media
  • A structure that can grow one work at a time

HAAM’s role

I made room for the work and connected the practice around it.

Product, interface, and operations

HAAM’s role covered portfolio strategy, information architecture, visual and interaction design, responsive implementation, artwork presentation, and the structure connecting Cindy’s paintings, exhibitions, expressive education, and professional contact.

Next case study

When older people became the consultants, memory became the product.
